Senior Management

Jean-François HUC (President & CEO)

Jean-François Huc is BioAmber’s CEO. Prior to BioAmber, he was the Chief Operating Officer of Diversified Natural Products (DNP), where oversaw the spin off of the succinic acid assets, at which time he stepped down from DNP to become President and CEO of BioAmber.  Prior to DNP Mr. Huc was CEO of TGN Biotech, a company producing recombinant proteins in transgenic animals.  Prior to TGN, he was the founder and CEO of MedExact, a startup offering web-based promotional services to pharmaceutical companies in the US and France.  Mr. Huc is a former Vice President of Alliance Management for Sanofi-Synthelabo, based in Paris, where he managed the company's global strategic alliances. Prior to Sanofi, he was a Partner with Arthur D. Little, a management consulting firm and Director of its French healthcare practice.   Mr. Huc has an M.B.A. from York University in Toronto and an undergraduate degree in biochemistry from the University of Western Ontario.

Andrew Ashworth (CFO)

Andrew  Ashworth joined  BioAmber from  DuPont-­‐Danisco,  where  he  was  the  CFO  of the Genencor division.  Andrew spent over 13 years at Genencor in senior financial positions and played an active role in the company’s initial public offering and subsequent post merger integrations with Danisco and then DuPont.  Prior to Genencor, Andrew held senior financial positions at VF Corporation and  Corning.  Andrew has over 25 years of senior financial experience. He began his career at Price Waterhouse and is a certified public accountant.

Jim Millis (CTO)

Jim Millis has worked in the field of industrial biotechnology for 30 years. Mr. Millis most recently served as CEO of Draths Corporation. His prior appointment was as Technical Director for Cargill's Industrial Bioproducts business unit, during which time new chemical businesses were created in biobased urethane polyols and in the application of metathesis chemistry, the latter now Elevance. Earlier positions included business and technical leadership roles at Maxygen and Bio-Technical Resources. Mr. Millis has been involved in the commercial development and scale-up of several technologies, spanning fermentation and chemical catalysis, and is co-inventor on 12 US patents and their foreign equivalents.

Ray Balee (VP, Polymers Business)

Ray BALEE was most recently Managing Partner of the private company Sinoven, LLC, where he led the commercialization of nanotechnology-based products and technologies, particularly those from leading Chinese national laboratories and universities. Prior to Sinoven, Mr. Balée was Managing Director/President -Nanotechnology and International for Headwaters Inc. During this time, he built its nanotechnology-based business from laboratory concept to sales of over $50 million and a market valuation of over $350 million. He secured strategic partnerships with leading chemical companies and Chinese national laboratories, with $100 million joint investment for manufacturing facilities in the US, Germany and Korea. His team won the 2007 President's Green Chemistry Challenge Award from the US EPA. Prior to Headwaters, Mr. Balée was Vice President of Business Management for Arco Chemical Company, responsible for its $700mm global group of styrene-based chemical and plastics businesses. Mr. Balée also led Arco Chemical's entry into Asia and Latin America, where he took regional businesses from start-up to highly profitable manufacturing and sales operations. Prior to Arco Chemical, Mr. Balée was Business Manager for General Electric Company-Plastics Division and District Sales Manager for Ford Motor Company-Glass Division. Mr. Balée has extensive international experience, including 12 years living in Japan, Singapore and China. He attended The Citadel and Wichita State University and holds BA and MS degrees.

Laurent Bernier (VP, Compliance & IP)

Since March 2011 Roger Laurent Bernier, Ph.D., P.Ag., has been Vice President Compliance and Intellectual Property. Prior to March 2011, he was BioAmber's Vice President R&D.  Prior to BioAmber, Dr. Bernier was Vice President R&D at Diversified Natural Products (DNP).  Prior to DNP, Dr. Bernier was Vice President Eastern Canada for Foragen Technology Management Inc., a venture capital fund created to help commercialize early-stage, advanced agricultural technologies from Canadian sources. Prior to Foragen, Dr. Bernier was the founding Executive Director of BioAtlantech, New-Brunswick's lead agency for the development of bio-industries and had been previously Vice President Life Sciences for Inno-centre, a Montreal-based organization dedicated to helping advanced technology entrepreneurs start up commercial ventures. As an industrial researcher, Dr. Bernier held various research and managerial positions within C-I-L, ICI Canada and Zeneca BioProducts, where he directly contributed to the discovery, development and launch of five biotechnology-related products and services. He received his Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology from the University of Montreal. He was the recipient of an INSERC industrial post-doctoral fellowship conducted at FPInnnovations (formerly the Pulp and Paper Research Institute of Canada or PAPRICAN) in collaboration with McGill University in Montreal.

Tom Dries (SVP, Operations Strategy)

Thomas Dries joined BioAmber after having worked for Gevo, where he was the VP, Business Development and Marketing.  Prior to Gevo, Tom had a 29-­year career at Cargill in a variety of roles including VP Operations of Cargill’s Biofuels Operating Services, General Manager of Midwest Lysine, a joint venture between Cargill and Degussa, Project Manager for Cargill’s Emerging Business Accelerator, Business Development Manager for Cargill Biosciences, and National Product Manager for Specialty Sweeteners. Tom has extensive experience in supply chain management, sugar contracting, site selection, building and operating fermentation plants and improving their performance over time.  

Dilum Dunuwila (VP, Engineering)

Dr. Dunuwila is Bioamber's longest serving employee, having been with the company since 1999. Dr. Dunuwila is the co-inventor of several succinic acid related patents, including formulations, applications, and separations that are at the core of BioAmber's technology platform. He has served as the Principal Investigator on several SBIR grants from the USDOE, USDA, USEPA, and the US Navy. Dr. Dunuwila received his Ph.D. and M.S. from Michigan State University in chemical engineering and his B.S. degree from Michigan State University in chemistry.

Mike Hartmann (Executive VP)

Mike Hartmann was previously responsible for the institutional sales and trading desk for CIBC World Markets in Montreal. His ten year career started in sales with CIBC WM and was promoted to Executive Director and oversaw the institutional equity sales and trading desk. He helped initiate and was the co-chairman of one of Canada's premier institutional conference for seven years. During his time at CIBC WM, over a billion dollars in equity was raised through IPOs, secondary offerings and bought deals for the Montreal office that was part of billions raised in equity over his career at CIBC WM. Prior to that, he was an institutional sales representative with Sprott Securities that specialized in small cap, fast growing companies. Mr. Hartmann is the Treasurer of the Canadian Andover Fund, providing scholarships to qualified students in Canada to attend Andover prep school in Andover MA. He has an International MBA from York University and received his BA from Rollins College in FL with a major in Economics.

Babette Pettersen (SVP, Marketing & Sales)

Babette   Pettersen  joined  BioAmber  from  Royal  DSM  where  she  was  VP  New Business Development in the Performance Material’s Cluster. Prior to DSM, Babette had a 22-­year career at Dow Corning, where she held leadership roles in Marketing and New Business Development across a broad range of industries, from Personal and Household Care, Packaging, Photonics, and Electronics, including both line and strategic responsibilities at the European and Global level.  Babette also led the corporate Marketing Excellence Council and was Program Director in the corporate Business & Technology Incubator.

Kenneth Wall (SVP, Manufacturing)

Kenneth Wall joined BioAmber after working for six years as a consultant. He was formerly President of Invista’s Intermediates and Specialty Products business, a role he assumed after Koch industries acquired Invista from DuPont in 2004.  Prior to the acquisition, Ken had a 30-­year career at DuPont, culminating as President of DuPont’s $2.7 billion global nylon, polyester, intermediates, nylon polymer and specialty products business.  Ken’s experience included Director of Integrated Operations, Director of Manufacturing, Global Business Manager, Plant Superintendent, R&D Director and Staff Engineer.
