BioAmber has a portfolio of bio-based chemicals.  Succinic acid is a platform chemical from which a number of products can be created in a wide range of end products that have over $10 billion in addressable markets.  BioAmber is also developing another platform of 6 carbon atom chemicals (C6 building blocks) that have addressable markets in excess of $24 billion. In total, the addressable markets for BioAmber’s chemicals manufactured from renewable feedstocks exceeds $34 billion.   

Bio-Succinic Acid

Succinic acid is a naturally-occurring dicarboxylic acid used in the manufacturing of many everyday products. Until recently, the common method of succinic acid production on an industrial scale was petroleum-derived. BioAmber has developed a proprietary process to produce bio-succinic acid from renewable feedstocks.

1,4 butanediol (BDO)

1,4-butanediol (BDO) can made from succinic acid and is used in the manufacturing of plastics, fibers and polyurethanes. BioAmber has licensed DuPont's hydrogenation catalyst technology to make bio-based BDO and THF from bio-succinic acid.

The market is moving to replace phthalates with alternative plasticizers where possible, especially in sensitive applications such as children’s products. BioAmber is developing bio-based succinate esters to replace adipate esters and general-purpose phthalate esters.

C6 Chemicals BioAmber is leveraging its flexible succinic acid platform to expand its product base to C6 building block chemicals. BioAmber has begun development of bio-adipic acid and also plans to produce bio-based caprolactam and bio-based hexamethylene diamine (HMDA) from renewable feedstocks.
